    Genetic study in patients operated dentally and anesthetized with articaine-epinephrine

    Aims: In this study we wanted to figure out if there was a correlation between OPRM1 N40D, TRPV1 I316M, TRPV1 I585V, NOS3 −786T>C and IL6 −174C>G polymorphisms and the response to locally applied articaine-epinephrine anesthetic. Methods: In this observational study, 114 oral cell samples of patients anesthetized with articaine-epinephrine (54 from men 60 from women), were collected from dental centers in Madrid (Spain). High molecular weight DNA was obtained from oral mucosa cells. The analysis of OPRM1 N40D (rs1799971), TRPV1 I316M (rs222747), TRPV1 I585V (rs8065080) and IL6 −174C>G polymorphism was performed through real-time PCR allelic discrimination using TaqMan probes. Polymorphism NOS3 −786T> C (rs2070744) was analyzed using RFLP-PCR. Results: The studied polymorphisms are involved neither in the response to the anesthetic, nor in the intensity of perceived dental pain. However, in a subset of female patients we found that TRPV1 I316M was associated with a delayed onset of anesthesia. Conclusions: There is no association among these polymorphisms and the time elapsed between the application of the anesthetic and the onset of its effect

    Two main types of noncoding small RNA molecules have been found in plants: microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). They differ in their biogenesis and mode of action, but share similar sizes (20-24 nt). Their precursors are processed by Dicer-Like RNase III (dcl) proteins present in Arabidopsis thaliana, and in their mature form can act as negative regulators of gene expression, being involved in a vast array of plant processes, including plant development, genomic integrity or response to stress. Small-RNA mediated regulation can occurs at transcriptional level (TGS) or at post-transcriptional level (PTGS). In recent years, the role of gene silencing in the regulation of expression of genes related to plant defence responses against bacterial pathogens is becoming clearer. Comparisons carried out in our lab between the expression profiles of different mutants affected in gene silencing, and plants challenged with Pseudomonas syringae pathovar tomato DC3000, led us to identify a set of uncharacterized R genes, belonging to the TIR-NBS-LRR gene family, differentially expressed in these conditions. Through the use of bioinformatics tools, we found a miRNA* of 22 nt putatively responsible for down-regulating expression of these R genes through the generation of siRNAs. We have also found that the corresponding pri-miRNA is down-regulated after PAMP-perception in a SA-dependent manner. We also demonstrate that plants with altered levels of miRNA* (knockdown lines or overexpression lines) exhibit altered PTI-associated phenotypes, suggesting a role for this miRNA* in this defence response against bacteria.     Thermal properties and crystallization of iron phosphate glasses containing up to 25 wt% additions of Si-, Al-, Na- and U-oxides

    This work is dedicated to the memory of Professor Peter Finlay James, who deceased on 2nd July, 2005.The thermal properties (expansion, Tg and TSOFT.) of glasses, having 56–66% P2O5, 14.8–34.2% Fe2O3 and 2–25 wt% additions of SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O and UO2, were comparatively estimated from dilatometric measurements in similar conditions. The Tg reversibility was clearly verified by varying the heating rates between 1 and 5 °C min−1. From linear equations fits of the various glass properties as functions of the six components it is suggested the iron, sodium and uranium oxides decrease the thermal expansion (for 50 < T ⩽ 300 °C), Tg andTSOFT. From DTA/XRD analysis of three glasses it was confirmed the crystallization tendency decreased with increasing the UO2 level in the glasses. Leaching test data for two compositions containing Na2O suggest addition of UO2 increases the chemical durability of the related glass. The roles of UO2, Na2O and Fe-oxide species as structural components of the glass network are discussed.The authors thank Messrs C. Cotaro, E. Scerbo and J.     Open FPGA-based development platform for fuzzy systems with applications to communications

    Soft computing techniques are gaining momentum as tools for network traffic modeling, analysis and control. Efficient hardware implementations of these techniques that can achieve real-time operation in high-speed communications equipment is however an open problem. This paper describes a platform for the development of fuzzy systems with applications to communications systems, namely network traffic analysis and control. An FPGA development board with PCI interface is employed to support an open platform that comprises open CAD tools as well as IP cores. For the development process, we set up a methodology and a CAD tools chain that cover from initial specification in a high-level language to implementation on FPGA devices. PCI compatible fuzzy inference modules are implemented as SoPC based on the open WISHBONE interconnection architecture. We outline results from the design and implementation of fuzzy analyzers and regulators for network traffic.     Control difuso de la tasa de transferencia de extremo a extremo en protocolos de transporte de Internet

    La dinámica del tráfico de extremo a extremo en Internet es un problema complejo para el cual los modelos disponibles son, en el mejor de los casos incompletos. Esta comunicación describe nuevos mecanismos para regulación de la tasa de transferencia de extremo a extremo en la capa de transporte por medio de sistemas difusos. Se describen una generalización basada en lógica difusa de los mecanismos de control de flujo y congestión de TCP (Transport Control Protocol), el diseño de un regulador difuso basado en mecanismo de ventana para TCP, así como la metodología de diseño empleada para simular e implementar de manera experimental el sistema. Se resume un estudio comparativo del regulador difuso presentado frente a los mecanismos tradicionales.
